Birth Certificate
The official record of a person's birth, issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. For births on or after 1 October 2023, the digital birth certificate works as a single proof of date and place of birth for school admission, driving licence, passport, Aadhaar, voter list and government jobs.

How to apply

Good to know
- Check spelling of names and date of birth before the hospital submits the report; corrections later take time
- Add the child's name within 1 year for free; later it needs a late fee (allowed up to 15 years)
- From 1 October 2026, registering a birth more than 2 years old needs a Judicial Magistrate First Class order
- Use only .gov.in or .nic.in portals; avoid agents selling fake or backdated certificates
Common questions
How can I download my birth certificate online?
If the birth was registered after the CRS system started, download it from dc.crsorgi.gov.in or your city portal using the registration number or mobile number linked to it.
What if the birth was never registered?
Apply for delayed registration with the local Registrar. Up to 1 year needs Registrar approval and a late fee; beyond that a Magistrate order is needed.
Is a birth certificate without the child's name valid?
It is a valid record, but most offices need the name. Add the name through the Registrar, free within 1 year.

Janm praman patra (birth certificate) ke liye kaun se documents chahiye?
Yeh documents taiyaar rakhein: Hospital discharge summary or birth report (for hospital births); Aadhaar or other ID of the parents; Parents' address proof; Parents' marriage certificate, if asked; For late registration: affidavit and proof of birth, e.g. school record or vaccination card.
