Driving Licence Renewal

Renewing your driving licence when it is about to expire or has expired. Most of the process can be done online on the Sarathi portal.

Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and choose your state
Select Services on Driving Licence and enter your licence number and date of birth
Choose DL Renewal and fill the form
Upload Form 1A (if 40+), photo and signature
Pay the fee online
Visit the RTO only if your state asks for biometrics or a test

Good to know

You can apply up to 1 year before expiry, or within 1 year after expiry.
If you apply more than 1 year after expiry, you may have to pass the driving test again.
States may add small service charges on top of the central fee.

Can I drive with an expired licence?

No. Once it expires you should not drive until it is renewed, and late fees apply after the grace period.

Is a medical certificate needed for renewal?

Yes, Form 1A from a registered medical practitioner is needed if you are 40 or older, and for transport vehicle licences.

Can I renew my licence from another state?

Yes, you can apply at the RTO where you now live and update your address during renewal.
