Learner's Licence
A temporary licence that lets you practise driving on public roads with a licensed driver beside you. You need it before you can apply for a permanent driving licence.

Documents to keep ready
- Proof of age, e.g. Aadhaar, birth certificate, passport, Class 10 certificate
- Proof of address, e.g. Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, utility bill
- Recent passport size photo and signature
- Form 1 self declaration of physical fitness
- Form 1A medical certificate if you are 40 or older, or for a transport vehicle
How to apply
- Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and choose your state
- Select Apply for Learner Licence and fill the form (Aadhaar lets you use the faceless option in most states)
- Upload documents, photo and signature
- Pay the fee online
- Watch the road safety tutorial if asked, then take the online test at home or book a test slot at the RTO
- Pass the test (usually 60% correct) and download your learner's licence
Good to know
- States may add service or smart card charges, so the total you pay can be higher than the central fee. Delhi, for example, shows ₹500 for one class.
- Minimum age: 16 for gearless two wheelers up to 50cc (with parent consent), 18 for other private vehicles, 20 for transport vehicles.
- Use only sarathi.parivahan.gov.in or your state transport site. Ignore agents who promise a pass without a test.
Common questions
Can I give the learner's licence test from home?
Yes, in most states. If you apply with Aadhaar, you can take the online test at home through the Sarathi portal.
When can I apply for a permanent licence?
After holding the learner's licence for at least 30 days, and before it expires at 6 months.
What if my learner's licence expires?
You must apply for a fresh learner's licence and take the test again.
