PAN Card

PAN is a 10 character tax ID from the Income Tax Department. It is needed to file tax returns, open bank accounts and for large money transactions.

Documents to keep ready

  • Aadhaar (needed for Instant e-PAN and e-KYC)
  • Proof of identity and address if not using Aadhaar e-KYC
  • Proof of date of birth
  • Passport size photo and signature for paper forms

How to apply

  1. For free e-PAN, open incometax.gov.in and choose Instant e-PAN
  2. Verify with Aadhaar OTP and download the e-PAN
  3. For a physical card, apply on Protean or UTIITSL using Form 49A
  4. Complete e-KYC with Aadhaar or send documents
  5. Pay the fee online
  6. Track status with the acknowledgement number
Good to know
  • Instant e-PAN is free and is valid everywhere, a physical card is optional
  • Having more than one PAN is illegal and can attract a ₹10,000 penalty
  • Under PAN 2.0, existing PAN cards stay valid, no need to reapply
  • Use only Protean, UTIITSL or incometax.gov.in, avoid agents charging extra

Do I need a new PAN card under PAN 2.0?
No. Existing PAN cards remain valid. A new card is issued only if you ask for a correction or reprint.
