Passport renewal: Fees, Documents and How to Apply (2026)

The short answer

Renewing a passport means applying for a re-issue: you get a new booklet with a new passport number and the old one is cancelled. Use it when your passport has expired, is about to expire, or has run out of visa pages.

Documents to keep ready

Tick what you already have. The shared list shows each one as ready or pending.

Your old passport (original) and a self attested copy of its first and last pages, including the page with the observation or ECR stamp if there is one
Proof of address, for example Aadhaar, bank passbook or electricity bill, if the address has changed
Proof of date of birth, for example birth certificate or Aadhaar, if you are asked for it
For a changed name: the marriage certificate or gazette notification, as the form asks
For a minor: the parents' passports or IDs and the documents Passport Seva lists for minors
Original documents plus one self attested copy of each

How to apply

Log in to passportindia.gov.in (or the mPassport Seva app) and choose Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport
Choose Re-issue, then normal or Tatkaal, and 36 or 60 pages
Fill in the form and upload the documents asked
Pay the fee online and book a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK appointment
Visit with the originals for photo and biometrics, and hand over the old passport when you are asked
Track the status and receive the new passport by Speed Post. The old passport is cancelled and returned to you

Good to know

A re-issue is a new booklet with a new passport number. Update your number with airlines, banks and your visa applications.
Passport Seva has separate application types for a passport whose validity has expired, one that is due to expire, and one that is lost or damaged. Pick the one that matches your passport.
Tatkaal re-issue is possible only if the number, name and photo of the old passport can still be read.
Pay only on passportindia.gov.in. Many fake passport sites charge extra for the same service.

If you do not have it or miss the deadline

Leaving or trying to leave India without a valid passport or travel document is an offence. It can bring jail up to 2 years or a fine up to ₹5,000, or both. Giving false information to get a passport, or using someone else's passport, has the same punishment. A person who is not an Indian citizen and gets a passport by hiding their nationality can get 1 to 5 years of jail and a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.

Common reasons for rejection and how to fix them

Reason	How to fix it
Old passport not handed over or not readable	Carry the original old passport. If it is damaged, apply under the lost or damaged category.
Name, date of birth or address does not match documents	Submit documents that match the form, or correct the form.
Wrong application type chosen (fresh instead of re-issue, or the reverse)	Start again and choose the type that matches your passport.
Police verification adverse or pending	Meet the police officer with your documents and clear any doubt.

Common questions

How much does passport renewal cost in 2026?

For an adult, re-issue of a 36 page passport (10 years) costs ₹2,500 and a 60 page one costs ₹3,500. Tatkaal adds ₹2,500. These fees apply from 1 July 2026, as shown on the Passport Seva fee page.

Is renewal the same as re-issue?

Yes. Passport Seva calls renewal a re-issue. You get a new booklet with a new passport number, and the old passport is cancelled.

Can I travel on my old passport after I apply?

Do not plan to. You hand over the old passport during the process and it is cancelled when the new one is issued. If you must travel soon, apply under Tatkaal and keep your appointment.
