Ration Card Face Authentication 2026: What Changes for You
UIDAI, the food department and NIC have launched Aadhaar face authentication for the ration system (ePDS). It is an extra way to prove who you are at the ration shop, mainly when your fingerprint does not work, and each State and Union Territory decides when to switch it on.

What is face authentication for ration cards?
It is a way to confirm your identity with your face instead of your fingerprint when you collect ration. UIDAI launched it together with the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) for the Electronic Public Distribution System (ePDS), the system that runs ration shops.
UIDAI described it as a consent based and contactless option that gives beneficiaries an additional mode of authentication, particularly where fingerprint authentication may be difficult. It was launched on 29 September 2026 at Aadhaar Samvaad in Kolkata, on the 17th Aadhaar Day.
Will my fingerprint still work at the ration shop?
Yes. Face authentication is described as an additional mode, not a replacement. If your fingerprint works, nothing changes for you.
It matters most for people whose fingerprints are hard to read, such as some older people and manual workers. For them, a second way to authenticate can mean getting ration without repeated tries.
Do I need to enrol my face or apply again?
The official note does not describe any new enrolment or any new application. It says the option is consent based, so you are asked before your face is used.
Ask your fair price shop dealer what the shop needs from you. Never share your Aadhaar OTP with anyone who says they will switch on face authentication for you.
Is face authentication available in my state?
That depends on your State or Union Territory. The new facility lets states connect face authentication to their own ePDS. The release does not list which states are ready.
