What it is and who pays
Professional tax is a state tax. A business or its owner pays a yearly amount, and an employer also deducts it from staff salaries and pays it to the state. In Madhya Pradesh it is collected by the Commercial Tax Department, Madhya Pradesh.
Deduction from staff salaries
Nil up to ₹2.25 lakh a year salary; ₹125 a month for ₹2.25 to 3 lakh; about ₹166 a month for ₹3 to 4 lakh; ₹208 a month above ₹4 lakh (₹212 in the last month). Employer deposits by the 10th of the next month.

- Apply online at MP Commercial Tax portal.
- Pay the official fee: Depends on turnover under the Schedule for dealers; an older copy of the Schedule shows ₹2,000 a year for turnover ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh and ₹2,500 above ₹50 lakh. Current figures not confirmed..
- Keep the certificate safe. Validity: Pay every year by 30 September (within 30 days of registration if registered after 31 August).
