What is the new e-way bill number format?
Taxguru and Studycafe reported on 4 and 5 November 2026 that GSTN has issued an advisory revising the numbering formats. An e-way bill number now has 12 digits. It will have 14 digits from 1 January 2027.
A consolidated e-way bill number, used when one vehicle carries several consignments, now has 10 digits. It will have 11 digits.
Why is GSTN changing the e-way bill number?
Both reports say the reason is volume. GSTN is quoted as saying the existing numbering capacity is expected to be exhausted because so many e-way bills are generated. A longer number creates room for more bills.

Is the 14 digit e-way bill final or proposed?
Both reports describe the change as proposed or revised and say it will first be released in the sandbox for testing. Technical details are to be published on the e-way bill portal. Neither report gives an advisory number, and we could not open the GSTN advisory itself.
So treat 1 January 2027 as the planned date. We will update this page when the official advisory is confirmed.
Who needs to update systems for the new e-way bill number?
The reports name taxpayers, GST Suvidha Providers, ERP and software providers and API integrators. They should update applications, APIs, database schemas and validation rules so nothing fails on the longer numbers.
A small trader who makes e-way bills on the portal by hand does not have to do anything special. If your billing app saves the number in a field limited to 12 digits, ask your software provider to fix it.
Does this change when an e-way bill is needed?
No. The reports talk only about the number format. The rules on when an e-way bill is needed, and its validity, are not part of this change. Check your GST registration details in our GST registration guide.
