In FY 2025-26, the largest groups of Indian exports to Japan were vehicles (US$ 1,029 million), organic chemicals (US$ 654 million), machinery and mechanical appliances (US$ 634 million). The largest groups of imports from Japan were machinery and mechanical appliances (US$ 3,892 million), electrical machinery and electronics (US$ 2,625 million), copper (US$ 2,377 million). Trade agreement and certificate of origin
India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Signed 16 February 2011, in force from 1 August 2011.
Goods that meet CEPA rules can carry a preferential certificate (₹600). Otherwise the non-preferential certificate costs ₹200.

What matters on the Indian side
- Machinery, electrical equipment, copper and inorganic chemicals lead imports from Japan in the data. Check BIS, CDSCO and WPC rules for the product class before you order.
- Vehicles, organic chemicals, machinery and seafood are among the larger export lines in the data. Seafood exporters register with MPEDA.
- Japanese buyers often ask for detailed quality documents; keep inspection and test reports with your shipping papers.
